How to Find a Cheap Villa Rental in Bali

If you’re thinking of staying for a few months or longer, then you can find a cheap villa rental in Bali if you search hard enough. Believe us though, it’s not as easy as you might think. Prices in Bali are cheap by Western standards, but when it comes to renting accommodation, many of the houses and villas available are luxury properties with expensive price tags.

The best areas to live if you are planning on staying Bali for a while are around the Legian, Seminyak, Kerobokan or Canggu areas. There is a lively expat scene here so you’ll easily make friends and have plenty of places to eat, drink and shop. Prices tend to be the most expensive around Oberoi in Seminyak because of the central location.

Generally speaking, it is cheaper the longer you rent for. If you’re looking to rent for a year and you can pay up front, this is even better. Some places will even let you put down rent for a few years.

Finding a cheap monthly rental can be more difficult, but they do exist. Like everything in Bali, renting a property is very informal. You pay the cash and you move in.

The first place you should look is in the Bali Advertiser. You can pick up a copy of this newspaper in Bintang supermarket on Jalan Raya Seminyak in Seminyak. In the classifieds there are plenty of houses and villas to rent. Bear in mind though that they are often quite expensive in here.

The second place you can look is on the board in Café Mocha on Jalan Raya Seminyak. Usually there are plenty of adverts posted here for house shares and villas to rent.

Failing that, you can drive around the area you like and look out for signs saying “House For Rent”. The signs usually have a number on them to call.

If you become really desperate you can always ask a local Balinese person if they can find you something. They always know somewhere and will even take you on the back of their motorbike to see it.

To give you a rough idea, on the lower end you might find something for $300 USD per month. You might find something like this in the Legian area, without air con. Medium range hovers around the $500 per month mark and then higher end properties are $750-$1000 per month.
